“I never meant to hurt you,

I never meant to make you cry,

but tonight…

I’m cleaning out my closet”

^ Sometimes you just have to quote good old Eminem. (My daughter is obsessed… and by association I have become sort of obsessed over the years too.)

I have nothing to wear and a closet packed with clothes! Sound familiar?? We think the solution is to go shopping. But maybe that is exactly the opposite of what we need to do.

Maybe we need to get rid of some stuff. You know what stuff I’m talking about! That stuff we keep hanging on to season after season, year after year, and yet we are not wearing it!

Sentimental attachment?? Paid a lot of money for it?? Hoping to fit into it some day?? Just plain scared we will regret it?? Trust me I get it. Guilty as charged. But with the change of seasons upon us, I’m determined to do something about it.

I have a sneaking suspicion that if I get rid of the clutter, it will be a lot easier to not only get dressed, but to see what it is I actually do need to buy (important!!!!).

After trying and failing numerous times to clean out my closet, walking in and walking out totally overwhelmed, I did a little research. And from this research I’ve come up with a list of questions that work for me, and hopefully for you too. I promise you will thank me later.

Some things are no brainers, but for those items that give us pause ask yourself these questions:

1. I really think this first question is the most important, Does it make you feel good when you wear it? Or, are you excited to wear it? Do you feel confident in it? This simple question has been a life saver.

2. Does it fit me? Is it seriously ever going to fit me?

3. Have I even had this on my body in the last year?

4. Is this item currently in style? Or does it represent my current style accurately?

5. If I was shopping right now, would I buy this?

6. If this is damaged in any way, am I really going to get it fixed?

Be honest with yourself. If the answer to any of these questions is NO, you know what you need to do. Sell, Donate or Trash.

I know this process is a lot, but it will feel so good when you’re done! And here comes the fun part! Everything you have left in your closet you will LOVE! You will be excited to get dressed! You will be able to SEE what you have in there! You will identify combinations you never knew you had!

You will actually be able to tell where in your wardrobe you actually have holes. You might see that you already have 5 simple black dresses, 10 pairs of destroyed jeans and 15 white t-shirts, but you don’t own a white blouse or a nice pair of black trousers…THEN!

And only then, do you take this new found knowledge and go SHOPPING! You’re Welcome! 😉

And oh yeah, a little disclaimer: None of these closets are mine. I wish.
